- In order to stop the destruction of the ozone layer we must stop the production
of these Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).
- In 1978 the U.S. government banned the use of all CFCs in
spray cans before the hole in the ozone was even
discovered.
- The Montreal Protocol was created in 1987 and has been
signed by 190 countries. The intention of this treaty was to
decrease and eventually completely phase out the production
of CFCs. The protocol was a success, reducing emissions of
ODS by 95%. Although the ozone has not yet begun to
regenerate, it is no longer being depleted.
- Planting trees and decreasing deforestation can also help decrease ozone destruction as plants give off oxygen.
